Curatorial text
María Bayá, Cintia Cuesta and Corina van Marrewijk take paper as the central and intimately constitutive material of their imaginative operations, and the role they propose to it is almost alchemical. While perceptively internalizing its epidermal, corporeal, chromatic qualities and conditions, they immediately lovingly submit it to a kind of programmatic metamorphosis. This is how paper, even in its visible specificity, abandons itself and surrenders its intrinsic plasticity and fickleness to silent and secret manipulations, or else sonorous and expansive, which conjuncturally convert its sustainable physiognomy into the prolific diversity of novel clothing.
María Bayá inscribes through hand embroidery, and on sensitive photographic surfaces, the linear evolutions of textures that move with currents, or are circumscribed in the delimitation of geometric segments, sometimes like synthetic traces of small branches and foliations, sometimes closer to pure abstraction.
Cintia Cuesta focuses on the rigor of openwork and the subtle volumetric marks of embossing. Its systematic cutting and fitting operations allude to the constructive canon, and also to evanescent architectural resonances, in surfaces that become delicately tactile under the effects of rigorous quadrangular hatchings.
Corina van Marrewijk assumes the naturalist fervor and the precious skills of her manual trade to germinate, in strict fidelity to the botanical typology, the realities and appearances of a harmonious artificial flora. The original vegetable cellulose returns transfigured in the form of sculptural flowers and paper plants.
